Dolly the sheep

Dolly is the first mammal in the world to be cloned. This used the technique of somatic cell nuclear transfer, where the cell nucleus from an adult cell is tranferred to an unfertilised developing egg cell that has had its nucleus removed. This hybrid cell is then stimulated by an electric shock and when it develops into a blastocyste it is implanted into a surrogate mother. Not only was this a remarkable scientific breakthrough but it immediately gained interest and concern from around the world on the future of cloning technology as it would affect humans.
